A group occupying Stapelton House, Oiliver Plunket have been ordered to leave the building by this Wednesday at a court hearing this morning.

The building's owners, Padlake Ltd sought the interlocutory injunction against three named defendants - Liam Mullaney , Patrick Buckley and Mark John Redmond.

At Cork Circuit Court, Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin granted the injunction against Mr Mullaney and ordering them to vacate the premises.

After the court hearing I was first to speak to Liam Mullaney of the Cork Community Resource Centre.

Liam also outlined what's next for the group.

One night in Bangkok isn't enough

If you ever go to Bangkok I’dsuggest three days is plenty to see what the Thai capital has to offer. While occasionally, there is some truth to avoiding a rigid itinerary when travelling, I would recommend some planning in this case. Thankfully the LonelyPlanet Thailand book was a decent guide.

For the first day, I went toChina Town in Bangkok which was incredible, as for the first time on my trip - Iwas the only white face walking the streets.

In contrast to the southern islands wherethere are so many young Irish people – who are mostly stopping off to partybefore seeking work down under - it’s almost depressing. Depressing, notbecause they have been forced to emigrate (and by the way I haven’t heard ofone Irish emigrant who isn’t having an amazing time in Oz, so enough with thesob stories please!) more due to the fact I’ve travelled 15 hours to escape thisdreary damp land of ours and all I heard was Cork and Kerry accents.

Anyway I digress. Back toChina Town. I’ve always dreamed of being invisible (don’t worry I’mnot digressing again) and when strolling through this part of Bangkok, filledwith narrow streets and incredible colour, it felt like I possessed thissuperhero power as no one gawked at this skinny shaggy blond haired giant. I couldn't imagine a Thai person walking through my Dad’s village without a few stares, some pointing and whispers of “Who’s dat fella dere.”

One word of advice, if you’regoing for a night out in Bangkok - bewary that it’s probably the worst city in the world to be hungover in. Sopolluted and smoggy, I remember struggling to breathe on the streets after oneparticular excessive night out. Thankfully, Bangkok’s shopping centres have amazing air conditioning, soyou won’t collapse for lack of clean air.

Most of the pictures on thispost are taken at the King’s Grand Palace which is so bling even Mr T wouldprobably think it’s too lavish. You'll noticein a couple of photos I'm wearing arather dodgy pair of trousers - which made my skinny legs look huge! Whenvisiting some temples in Thailand any clothing that exposes too much skin (suchas shorts or vests) are banned. Thankfully, the Palace provides some suitableattire which covered my pasty white legs. I was also asked to wear silly pants when I had a fewdrinks in Bangkok's highest building, the very posh Vertigo bar.

Bangkok in three days

First day: China town andspend the evening watching some manic Thai boxing.

Second day: The King's Palaceis worth a visit and a night out in Koh San road road is a good laugh.

Third day: Nurse yourhangover by walking through Bangkok’s vast shopping centres.

There are dogs everywhere in Thailand! The last three pictures are from an exhibition showcasing the best photographs that were taken during the recent floods in Bangkok, which were the worst ever. During this devastation thousands of dogs died but these were some of the lucky pooches.

Without doubt, my favourite Thai beach island was Ko Tao. Traditonally a mecca for amateur divers, the island attracts a more laid back tourist than the neighbouring Full Moon Party island of Koh Phangan.

If you do decide to go to the Full Moon Party, Ko Tao is the perfect place to detox as it's a short ferry ride away.

Everybody was Muay Thai fighting

For just €30 I was sitting front row enjoying ten frenetic bouts of Mauy Thai at the Rajadamnern Stadium, Bangkok. This is Thailand's national sport and as you'd expect, it's taken very seriously by the natives (almost exclusively men) with numerous bets being placed on the night.

Mauy Thai differs from boxing as elbows, knees and feet can be used to attack. Every successful strike is greeted by a bellowing "HEEEEE" from the crowd which creates an incredible atmosphere.

I’m going to keep my words relatively short this week as I have some great pictures toshare. One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai.

The2,000 acre sanctuary is home to 36 elephants that have been rescued from crueltreatment. The Elephant is Thailand’s national animal and is revered by most natives - though has been the victim of abuse and mistreatment from circuses and are oftenforced to street perform for tourists.

Thebrainchild of the park is Sangdeun “Lek” Chailert who believes "without elephants,Thailand is empty.” Having established the sanctuary in the early 1990s herdevotion is extraordinary - with no Government funding Lek relies on donations andadmission fees that tourists pay, which goes towards feeding the animals. Avast amount of food is needed: Elephants spend 70% of the day eating.

Ahundred years ago there were 100,000 elephants in Thailand and were mostly usedfor logging and moving other heavy objects. Today there are just 2,000 left, it’s thought hundreds were abandoned and left to die after logging was banned in1989.

Tourismis the only practical use for the animal today – with Elephant rides continuing to be a hugely popular attraction. The park tries to ensure they are treatedfairly and encourages any tourist to report cruelty if they witness it.

Personallyspeaking the day was incredible as our group got an education in Thailand’sprofound connection with elephants, as well as spending the day feeding andbathing the gentle giants.

Woulddefinitely recommend it. Anyway, here are the pictures.

One awful night in Patong

Aftera two day journey which included layovers in London, New Delhi and Bangkok Ihad finally reached my first destination – Patong, Phuket. And what a dump it was.

Oneof the most godforsaken places you’d ever have the misfortune of stepping footin. Every negative adjective in the English language accurately describes this kip: dirty, decrepit and sleazy are a few that come to mind. It reminded me of a joke I heard about Cardiff(which is a lovely city) where a bomb was dropped… and caused £4 worth ofdamage. In Patong’s case if a bomb exploded it would probably improve the appearanceof the town.

Iwas forewarned that this part of my trip would probably not be a highlight, butwhen I read that Patong was the 'Sin City of Thailand’ I was curious to seejust how sinful it actually was. And Christ, it was bad.

As mentioned in the previous post, it probably was the only place on my trip thatlived up to the negative stereotypes portrayed by some western media. In thecentre of Patong is the infamous Bangla road: a raucous neon flashing lightstrip lined with bars, discos and lap dancing clubs where all sorts of debauchery is on display. This part of Thailand caters for any salacious desire.

Itreminded me of a generic party spot in the Canary Islands, if it was jointlyrun by Pete Doherty, Keith Richards and Hugh Hefner. As you would expect prostitutionon the strip, which is actually illegal in Thailand, is rife. Everywhere Iglanced there were scantily clad women and transvestites seeking clients.

WhenI wasn’t being accosted by a Tuk Tuk driver or pinched for a massage, most shockingly,small children no more than seven years of age hurtled towards me wondering if Iwanted to buy a bracelet. Innocent enough you might say. But stitched in writingon the bracelets were phrases like ‘I love anal sex’ and numerous other overlysexual messages along the same manor. These children were oblivious to the unscrupulous mayhem that surrounded them.

Anotherimage that I’ve been unable to erase from my memory were middle aged men, someeven 70 plus, walking hand in hand with Thai women who were young enough to be theirgranddaughters. In some cases you could see these were lonely western menseeking companionship, but mostly, the reason for their company was obviously sexual.It’s a sad fact that thousands of men each year descend to Patong andsome parts of Bangkok especially to indulge in sex tourism.

Itshould be noted that many of these Thai women are not involved in the sex trade,having a solid, loyal dependable man from a western country is a big attractionfor numerous Thai women.

Lateron in my trip one local women I spoke to, who worked at a bank in Koh Phangan,was fed up of Western men asking her ‘how much?’ whenever she happened to be ina bar. “I wish some tourists would stop thinking that all Thai women during theevening are prostitutes”, she said.

Meanwhileas I walked gingerly back to my hostel the madness did not cease. I had merelywitnessed the undercard before the main event. Whilst chatting with a fellowIrish tourist in the front porch of my hostel I heard a women violentlyscreaming in the distance. The disturbed noise grew louder then, suddenly, Isaw a man receive relentless strikes to the arm with a flick baton fromanother man who appeared to be a native. Immediately, before anyone could help thevictim, the hostel manager scurried out and pleaded with the attacker to stop,which he did immediately. To be honest in any violent situation, especially abroad,I’ve never been much of a have a go hero – opting instead to call for more usefulassistance such as the police. However on this occasion any enforcement were conspicuousby their absence.

Thevictim was a friendly Australian tourist named Bill, who unfortunately was inthe wrong place at the wrong time.

Whywas he attacked? When walking close to a nearby road with his girlfriend, Billnoticed a Tuk Tuk driver aggressively beeping his horn (Tuk Tuks are a sortmotorised rickshaw which offer an alternative to the traditional type of Taxi).The driver wanted him to get off the road to clear the way for his vehicle.Bill wasn’t impressed by the man’s tone and the violence subsequently ensued,after the driver brandished a flick baton.

LuckilyBill, somehow escaped with a badly swollen forearm, though was obviously visiblyshaken from the incident. Evenmore fortunate was the hostel manager’s intervention – who probably saved Billfrom being hospitalised – telling the attacker that he should not feel threatened.

Iwas told by the manager and other locals the following day that attacks likethis are becoming more frequent. Apparently, the local mafia have a huge influencein Southern Islands such as Phuket and they run many of the Tuk Tuks thatoperate in Thailand. Suchis the Mafia’s clout, they render the local police almost insignificant and explainswhy I hadn’t seen a single bobby patrolling the streets during my time inPatong.

Onreflection, quite an eventful evening. My first 24 hours in Thailand wouldn’t seemout of place in an episode of The Sopranos. Patongreally is a jungle.

Though despite my extreme qualms, I didn't regret my visit.One of the joys of travelling is how unpredictable it is and while some momentsmay not seems pleasant at the time, the experiences whether positive or not, areones I remember and sometimes provide anew perspective.

I’mnot doing much for tourism in Patong but these are the things that most travelguides don’t tell you. In fact, I’ll probably be banned from returning there. Luckyme.

Twoweeks have passed since I returned home for Christmas after gallivanting for amonth across Thailand. And now I’ve polished off the final tin of Jacobs USA biscuits,I feel I should share some tales and photos from my travels. Over thenext two weeks this blog will reflect on some crazy happenings - from a man gettingassaulted with a flick baton by a local taxi driver to a boat trip where Ithought at one point I was going to die (it’s actually quite a funny story).

Likemy recent trip across Europe I decided to venture solo, and when I told myfriends and family that Thailand was the next stop, some, looked at me as if Irevealed I was about to brave the front line in a war torn country.

Theirfears were, perhaps, heightened as the South East Asian Nation, particularlyBangkok, has garnered a rather sordid reputation over years. Go on, be honest,when you think of Thailand what comes to mind? Yes it’s Ladyboys or all sortsof other sinful debauchery. I’ll admit, prior to my travels there, I had my misconceptionstoo (thanks to Alan Patridge). Much like I cringe when a non-Irishman shouts ‘topof the morning’ to or ‘POTATO!’ the Thai stereotypes - perpetuated by western mediaand films like the Hangover Part II - deeply irks the natives.

Thoughcertain temptations are on offer in some parts of the country, Thailand ingeneral, is a deeply spiritual and religious nation with disrespect treated veryseriously (you can be sent to prison for saying anything disparaging about The King).

While some of my friends were concerned, telling my Mum - who’s such an irrationalworrier it’s unfathomable - about my new adventure was going to be difficult.Travelling to Europe on my own was bad enough, but Thailand? Asia? The otherside of world?! My Mother, who I do adore and is an amazing parent, is notblessed with great geographical knowledge; all she knows of Thailand is thatit’s foreign, and it’s a “dodgy place because I’ve seen it on Sky TV.” Again, western media paints a bastardised picture of an innocuous nation.

Iknew she was the only stumbling block if I was to step outside of Europe forthe first time. By the way, I’m 26. Though as we know in Ireland - the IrishMammy is unique in her adoration and protection for her little boy. My Mum,however, takes these worries to another stratosphere.

Soin order to prevent her from having a heart attack or a nervous breakdown, I tookmy usual course of action…and lied. Well, a sort of white lie.

Isaid I was travelling with a friend called Pete, who I’d met in Europe, thuseasing her anxiety. Pete doesn’t exist. I told my Mother that Pete - a respectablename I thought - was from Melbourne, Australia and plied his trade as a hotshot lawyer. Once I revealed his back story (which included how he just broke upwith his long term girlfriend on bad terms and needed a break), I could see the reliefetched on her face as she knew ‘her Con’ was in safe company.

Thoughwhen you tell a lie, you inevitably have to continue it. Even on the phone tomy Mother in Thailand she’d ask me “how’s Pete?” After a brief moment of bewilderment,I’d respond and say “oh yeah he’s fine” sometimes even divulging his imaginary behaviour by adding something like “he drank a bit too much again lastnight” – just to comfort the Mother in case she had any doubts he existed.

Inever told my Mum the truth about Pete, even carrying on the lie when I returnedhome saying he was now back in Australia working and had even reconciled withhis ex.

Ofcourse the penny will drop if she’s reading this.

The next postincludes a story of a real Australian and why you should always leave space fora Tuk Tuk driver.

One of the many sandy beaches on the tiny tropical island of Ko Phi Phi. With no roads, there are two ways to get around: by foot or jump aboard one of the numerous taxi boats that line the shores.

Most of the Temples, including this one at the Grand Palace in Bangkok, are free for Thais but us poor tourists have to pay. The reason for this, I think, is the tourist tax that natives pay.

Built in 1383 Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep is one of the oldest temples in Chiang Mai and sits at a 1,073 metre elevation on the slopes of Mount Suthep.

A baby elephant who was rescued from a circus playfully lifts her for leg for onlookers at the Elephant Nature Park, Chiang Mai. The 2,000-acre sanctuary is a rescue centre for elephants who have been cruelly treated. There will also be a piece about this park.

Baths and Buda-"pests"

Aftermy first night in Budapest I woke up felling, let’s say, rather groggy.

“Yougot to go to the baths mate, they’re a great hangover cure”, chirped oneAustralian who was staying at my hostel.

Thiswas the Széchenyi thermal bath, the largest municipal bath in Europe and featured in aMichael Palin travel documentary. I’d be madnot to go. ThoughI was missing two vital things for this experience: sun cream and swimming shorts.

Itwas over 30 degrees and as I’ve mentioned in previous posts - Irish people andscorching sunshine don’t mix particularly well. Iremember bathing sun-cream free during a previous holiday in Portugal, for justten minutes, and my skin resembled the Dutch national team jersey.

Ipopped into a nearby chemist and opted for factor 35 - though my quest forshorts was proving less than fruitful. I couldn't find a shop in Budapest that sold them. Not to worry, I thought,they’d surely stock the necessary swimming attire at the baths.

AsI walked towards my destination I noticed numerous stalls selling hats,footballs, Hungarian sport shirts and the usual tourism crap. Thankfully, theyalso stocked shorts. Unfortunatelythe colours were rather garish and the only other option was a skimpy pair of speedos. I thought I’d save Budapest from that gut wrenching sight.

Iasked the stall owner – whose English was limited - if he had a pair of blueshorts. “I go check,” he said. Success! He revealed a more conservative pair ofblue Hawaiian style baggy shorts, but they were a size too small.

“Isthere a changing room?”, I asked. What a stupid question. What market stall hasa changing room?! Afterrepeating the question several times he eventually understood and said “go inmiddle [of stall] behind towels.”

WhenI did, to my shock, there was a middle aged women sitting in a tiny space – whoI assumed was his business partner – casually reading a newspaper. Afterexplaining what I was doing, she seemed unperturbed with me dropping my jeans totry on the hallowed shorts. Which perturbed me.

Theywere a bit tight, but fitted. With that I scurried out of the primitivedressing room, paid the kind man wearing my new shorts while carrying my oldjeans in a transparent plastic bag. Trustme. This was some sight. Again, not my finest hour.

Iarrived at the baths and entered the dressing room with some trepidation (seethis previous post ). Imust admit prior to showing off just my new shorts, I was slightlyself-conscious. Iexpected most of the bodies in the baths to be muscular and in pristinecondition. My “temple” is not.

Ineedn’t had worried: as when I stepped out there were a liqurist allsorts ofbodies on show - none of which were particularly pleasing on the eye, no matterwhat your sexual orientation is.

Ieventually rested myself in one of the heated outdoor pools and feasted my eyeson a scene that was a treat for anyone who had a penchant for people watching. Therewere middle aged men playing chess and one elderly geezer whose skin was so tanned it appeared he was wearing a bedraggled bodysuit of brown leather. Alsoon show, were an array of rotund ladies.

I could have bathed all day but a used floating plaster heading towards me, forced my exit.

I'm more of a draughts man

"The Mugging"

Laterthat night while walking back to my hostel I experienced what would usually be– for me anyway – a terrifying experience. Iwas the victim of an attempted mugging. Well, sort of...

Whilestrolling, I was aggressively approached on the eerie Budapest streets by ateenage Hungarian with a pierced eyebrow who was wearing a shiny adidastracksuit that the late Jimmy Saville would be proud of. Hewas also flanked by two teenage girls wearing identical attire (I didn’t clocktheir hairstyles).

Sayingsomething threatening in Hungarian the young rapscallion pointed to my pocket. Iwaved my hand and chided, “NO GO AWAY” as if I was warding off the advances of agroup of overexcited dogs. Iwalked on and wasn’t bothered again by the unfriendly trio.

Nowordinarily I would have surrendered, handed over my wallet and valuables while sayingsomething predictable like “Please don’t hurt my me.” But because of thecircumstances, tonight was different.

Inmy description of the attempted muggers, I neglected to mention the gang were astall as Janette Krankie (or Danny DeVito if you’re American). Beingsix foot plus, I skied above them. So they weren't the most imposing ofcriminals.

Alsoafter a few drinks all men become braver, however, I’d admit my "muggers" were as intimating as a litterof kittens . The whole day left me confused rather thananything else.

So now you know, when in Budapest: (1 Pack the necessary bath attire and (2 beware of pint sized muggers.

I am a jelly filled doughnut

Stereotypes are intriguing. Thesegeneralisations, for some, can dictate whether we converse with a nationalityor keep a courteous distance.

On my recent travels I met numerous people whodebunked these stereotypes and some who confirmed them. I surmised that, yes, Parisians are surly, Americans can be loud and Italian men much like their ousted premier, are often sleazy. And of course, we Irish do have a penchant foralcohol.

However, one myth about the Germans - is thatthey suffer from a sense of humour bypass. Having spent some time in Berlin Ican attest to this fallacy.

Berliners like a laugh and, they especially,like a joke. “Oh Ireland, ze country we give all ze money to” was the first drollgreeting from a local taxi driver. Of course my retort should have been, “Wellstop paying us and see what happens”, but I opted for a polite laugh instead.

Although, they do live up to the stereotype ofbeing a diligent hard working race.

As Berlin has garnered a reputation as a party city- I looked forward to a vibrant night out. Unfortunately I discovered that thecity was devoid of atmosphere. What was going on? I was reliably informed by myhostel reception worker - that Berlinersrarely go out during a working week, but after five days of toiling they love to party, at weekends only. Very sensible, I thought.

While staying at my hostel I met an eccentric Brazilian called Mario, who despite being 33 looked as if he just startedcollege. One thing I do know about Brazilians is they are religious followers of soccer – this wasn’t a stereotype, it was fact.

He spoke passionately about his team, SauPaolo FC and seemed oddly fascinated by Irish football.

“You know Conor one Irish player is veryfamous in Brazil”, he said, as I expected him to say Roy Keane, Paul McGrath orperhaps George Best. Though to my bewilderment, he revealed it was Tony Cascarino - apopular former Irish target man but not our greatest warrior by any stretch.

Big in Brazil, apparently

After our footy chat we (and thong man Pete)ventured out on a busy Saturday night in Berlin.

We started the evening at a fairly nondescript bar which was brim full of young quirky Berliners. After only 90 secondsof sipping our pints Mario seemed visibly on edge and was intenselystaring like a hungry lion eying the wildebeest.

He was indeed on the prowl, but forsomething else – women. “Come on guys Jesus Christ, we have to start talking tosome ladies; this place is full of beautiful women”, he whispered.

Like most heterosexual men I’m certainly notaverse to conversing with attractive young ladies, but Mario’s overt intensity wouldmake any female scarper like the aforementioned wildebeest.

And so another box was ticked on the list of stereotypes:Brazilian men are obsessed with women.

I met other Brazilians earlier on my trip - whereinitial small talk would frequently turn to inevitable lady admiring. From myexperience, Brazilian men’s preoccupation with women was akin to my obsession with a comfy chair or the perfect sandwich.

Meanwhile back at the Berlin Bar, thankfully, after a brief chat with an awkward Irishman and a laid back ozzie, Mario taperedhis ravenous desires. At least, I thought.

When I returned from a bathroom visit, the Australian Brazilian alliance were talking tothree German ladies. As I approached our table I thought: “Fly the Irish flagproud here, don’t disgrace yourself.”

After I was introduced, I took a gulp of wheatbeer and tried to think of a witty opening line (after all, I had to live up tothe stereotype of the supposed ‘witty’ Irish man). I had it! What better way of ingratiatingyourself than saying “Ich bin ein Berliner” - the famous words President Kennedy usedwhen he visited Berlin in 1963.

A smoother talker than me

I uttered the phrase and expected my new Germanfriends would be impressed with this historical reference, though instead theyguffawed, as if I clumsily dropped my glass of wheat beer.

Alf Stewart: an ozzie legend who certainly wouldn't wear a thong

Ileft Paris with a heavy heart and a significant dent in my bank account (thanksto €8 pints). Forthe next stop on my European trip I was joined in Berlin by a thoroughly decentMelbourne native, called Joe.

Ifyou ever decide to travel solo like myself, you’ll undoubtedly bump into aplethora of Australians - who by and large, are a great bunch. With the sheervolume of wanderlusting ozzies, it’s little wonder the young Irish arefinding employment down under at a rapid rate.

Thoughus paddies have much in common with our Australian friends (beer, frankness ofthought, fondness for beating England at sport and drinking more beer) thecountries have many polar opposites – and I’m not just talking geographical location.

Theobvious one is skin colour. While a pasty skinned Irish man reaches for thefactor 25, or alternatively leaves his skin sizzle into a lobster red colour (see above),the Australian turns a natural golden brown without a trace of sun cream. Luckybuggers.

Obviously, the reason for this pigmentation difference is our contrasting weather. Australiabasks in glorious sunshine (albeit dangerously scorching),while the most common question Irish people ask themselves is: ‘should Ibring my umbrella today’?

There’salso the stark distinction between our economies and standard of living. I won’tbore you with the details, but suffice to say an Australian bin man’s annualwages are almost comparable with an Irish solicitor.

Relativelyhigh income and banks that lend (imagine that!) means young Australians canoften travel for months on end with encouragement from their current or futureemployers. My new buddy Joe told me his adventures would enhance his CV.

Thereare also the dissimilar fashion trends: numerous young Australian men seem tobe permanently wearing white stringy vests which show off their toned arms.Again, lucky buggers. We Irish love nothing more than wearing a woolly jumperwhile snugging up to an open fire (ok, maybe that’s just me).

Thankfully,my new Australian friend wasn’t partial to a white vest, which I’ve alwaysassociated with the rowdy Scottish comic character Rab C Nesbitt (below).

Aswe both settled into our hostel room Joe asked something that flummoxed me andalso highlighted another disparity between our nations. “Have you seen mythongs mate” he asked? “Excuse me?!”, I replied.

Iknew Australians were confident with their bodies, but exposing one’s bare behind by wearing a dental floss like material was something I only associatedwith swim wear models, and lap dancing club magnate Peter Stringfellow.

Tobe frank, I’ve always been a person who’s shied away from male nudity,frequently bracing myself before I step foot into a men’s changing room - as Iexpect to see a middle aged naked man casually chatting about the stockexchange while drying his back.

Inthe moment, I also found it disconcerting that Joe asked for his ‘thongs.’Plural! I flinched at the thought of him possessing more skimpy underwear thana branch of Ann Summers.

“Foundthem”, he said. I winced. Then sighed. As I realised my assumption was lost inthe Australian vernacular. “Oh you mean flip flops” I gasped with reliefetched on my face. We both exchanged a hearty laugh at our misunderstanding.

Anothersubtle contrast between our two countries is that paddies seldom wear flip-flops/thongs(unless we’ve lost a comfy pair of slippers).

Perhaps my nation's differences are endearing, creating a bond with the ozzies - resulting in Irish emigrants being so warmly welcomed when plying their trade in the land of Alf Stewart. I’ll have a beer to that, whilewearing ~~thongs~~ flip-flops!

I have a startling admission to make. One that rails againstthe consensus like a dinner party with George Hook and Eamon Dunphy discussingcurrent affairs. I quite like the Parisians. Much maligned, they may be surly, even a tad arrogant, but compared tomany of their continental cousins they refuse to conform - giving Paris its distinctivenessand making it a mecca for eccentrics who may be scoffed at elsewhere in Europe.

During my time there I stayed in the Montmartre district,which had a constant atmospheric buzz with trendy Parisians drinking their espressos andsmoking cigarettes, while watching the world go by. Even though my French waslimited, I could tell there was no talk of recessions or the future of the euro- conversations that have become a preoccupation in Ireland – they just sat andconversed in utter contentment. I’m a patriotic man, but at times during my stay, I'll admit, I wished I was French.

After my first night in Paris I took the Montmartre walking tour which gave me an intriguing insight into the history of the district, whichis a bastion for creativity. Some of Europe’s most famous artists - includingPicasso, Matisse and Van Gough - all lived a scant life here at some point, wherethey’d fill their evenings drinking wine, playing musical instruments and gettinghigh from licking and inhaling their paint. Still to this day, Montmartre prides itself onbeing kooky and outlandish.

I was shown on the tour one particular restaurant, Au Lapin Agile (below), where Pablo Picasso used to frequent regularly, despite being penniless.Apparently the French artist, before his fame, made a deal with the restaurantowner where he exchanged his original canvases for free meals. The deal was done and let’s just say the eaterywere quite happy they made this particular agreement (especially their bankmanager!) as Picasso’s enigmatic art is proudly displayed on the walls.

The most impressive part of my tour was seeing the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris (see top)which is situated on the summit of Montmartre - boasting a stunning view of thecity. Designed by Paul Abadie, it was built in 1919 after World War I as asymbol of national penance for French political excesses.

Accordingto our tour guide the church offers the cheapest accommodation in Paris: youcan sleep inside the beautiful structure for just €5 a night. There is a catch,however, as you must arise and pray, at any hour no matter how ungodly, when you’rerequested to by one of the church’s nuns. I genuinely considered this thriftyoption as my hostel was booked out one busy night, though with my heavysleeping - I’d feel sorry for the poor nun who would have to wake me. Thankfully,I found alternative accommodation.

I’dhighly recommend the tour, though there was one disappointment. During the walkwe were taken to Au Levain d’Antan, a bakery which recently won a prize for thebest baguettes in Paris, therefore the best in the World. As a bread lover, Icouldn’t wait! When I tucked into my long bread stick I was expecting an explosion of flavour, though to behonest, I preferred the baguettes back in Ireland. It was tasteless. And thecrust was so tough, it would have been more use as truncheon for the Jean Dams.Maybe if I return to Paris I’ll introduce these fellow bread lovers to a proper Irishbaguette: Tesco’s Cuisine de France bread stick.

LastJuly I had the honour of meeting and interviewing our new President – Michael DHiggins. I'm delighted that such a genial and intellectual statesman will represent Irelandabroad. Below is an article I wrote for the Waterford News & Star.

Duringhis walk of city he met voters with his party colleague and Waterford TD CiaraConway.He alsostrolled through the Tall Ships craft village speaking to many involved beforemaking his way towards the newly opened Bishop’s Palace where he spoke to theWaterford News & Star.

A keenacademic he believed one of Waterford’s great achievements is WIT and believedit had been unfairly treated in his time at the cabinet table during themid-nineties when he was Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht Affairs.

“I hadalways been in favour of Waterford having University status because of the factof what it would mean to have a levelling up of opportunities of access andintake in the South East. There could be a case made by Waterford that wasn’tmade by others. WIT has been assisted not just through its presence but itspositive image which was brought by its students. It has so much going for it”,he said.

Praisingthe Tall Ships craft village he added, “This is a wonderful celebration ofcreativity. It’s great to see art and craft being restored together in thismost magnificent way.”

Speakingabout his earlier memories of the Deise he said, “You know the very first timeI came to Waterford in a conscious political sense was when I was invited downby Brian O’Shea many decades ago. I visited the leather factory and saw a veryhigh level of craft, which I saw today in the craft village. I also remembercoming back to Waterford Crystal, which was being reorganised again and again.It was a mistake for the region to rely on Waterford Crystal as its onedominant employer. When I think of Waterford I also have an image of the portand the salinity of the water and the fact you have the purest salmon runningalong the sea.”

Mr Higgins whoalso has passion soccer reminisced about Waterford United soccer club. “Iremember their wonderful soccer team, when they were at their very best andproducing Internationals” he said.

Whenasked if would Waterford have a friend in Michael D ifhe is to become president, he said in his own in distinctive way, “Absolutely!”

First night in Paris

This post has absolutely nothing to do with the Eiffel Tower, but doesn't it look lovely.

I had arrived at Charles DeGaulle Airport, and so began my month long European adventure. But was Ilooking forward to sipping an evening cappuccino with chic locals outside afunky café while the Eiffel Tower sparkled in the Paris skyline? Not really. Perhapsthis pasty skinned Irishman looked ahead to strutting down the trendy ChampsElysees, rubbing shoulders with fashion obsessed Parisians? Unlikely. It wasAugust 31^st, a momentous date for all football fans, as this wasTransfer Deadline Day!

As I stepped aboard the Metroon route to my hostel, with the pungent underground odours making me queasy,all I could think was: could QPR really sign Anton Ferdinand? Maybe the fetidair was making me delirious. Nevertheless, I was in a pleasant daydream ponderingall the possible formations should the transfer conjecture materialise -how envious clubs would be, I thought, with a three pronged attack including Messrs Wright-Phillips, Owen and Bellamy. Oh, this was going to great.

When I eventually woke up from my planet QPR daydream I realised – I had missed my stop. After asking locals for directions (using my ‘Del Boy’ French) Ieventually arrived in Montmartre, near Paris’s Red Light District – and wasstruck by the below image.

The nearbyboulevard was lined with Sex Shops and Lap Dancing Clubs - thoughthe only ‘happy ending’ I was interested in was whether QPR could sign ShaunWright Phillips before the transfer window slammed shut.

My plan for the evening, rathersadly, was to follow the transfer deadline day hashtag on twitter to track justwho my beloved team were poised to sign. The plan was scuppered, however,as my hostel’s internet connection was broken meaning I would be forced toventure outside in search of a bar that was televising Sky Sports News (The home of Transfer Deadline Day hysteria).But this was Paris’s Red Light District, late in the evening, and the usualsolitary male pacing these streets would be in search of something rather more salaciousthan Jim White’s hyperbole as to whether QPR could make an audacious bid for Sebastien Bassong.

Walking gingerly along the boulevardI was predictably approached by various gentlemen wondering if I wanted to“have a good time.” “Not interested thank you”, I replied. My quest was tofind the obligatory Irish pub – every major European city has at least one -which would undoubtedly be showing this massive evening; that was the only ‘goodtime’ I was pursuing tonight.

As I continued to stroll,the streets became darker and increasingly eerie with the only light being the sordid neonflashing signs - I was slightly disconcerted. But then, success! I noticed abar with garish green décor, a bicycle on the window and signs to Galway andMayo – it was of course, an Irish Bar. Such was my excitement, I didn’t even noticethe pub’s name, as I scurried inside to see if they were televising the mammothevent. It was on, though unfortunately I would have to rely on Sky Sport New's various information tickers and trying to lip read Jim White, as there werepictures, but no sound.

The bar had seen better night’sattendance wise: there was only a small boisterous group of British studentsand a burly Nigerian bouncer called Tommy who was also transfixed by the soundlesstelevision screen as his team, Arsenal, were also in the market for new players.

One of the beauties oftravelling solo is the new friendships (albeit transient) that forge in the most random places, andTommy and I bonded in a way only two men can, when talking about football. I was relieved I made a new buddy at this point, there are few sorrier sights than a solitary man watchinga muted television in Paris’s Red District.

I asked could he persuade thebarman to turn the sound on. He said he did, but unfortunately the raucousBritish gang would rather listen to some cliché Irish ditties. Alas, we wereoutnumbered.

By this stage I discovered QPRsigned Luke Young and former Arsenal ‘defender’ Armand Traore -whose last game for the Gunners was hispart in their 8-2 humiliation by Manchester Untied. “You signed Armand Traore, wewould have paid QPR to take him off us”, guffawed Tommy.

With just a half hour to go,QPR captured the player I was hoping for: Shaun Wright-Phillips. With thisjoyous news, I shook Tommy’s hand – did the usual thing of inviting a newfriend you meet abroad back to your hometown when in reality you probably won’t ever see each other again – and contently skipped down the boulevard, eventually arriving at my hostel.

Of course when my Mother asked "what did you get up to in your first night in Paris?", I lied. Now she knows, and so do you. Don’tjudge me…

What does Tallinn have to offer?

Having been to Estonia just two weeks ago,here is my advice on the capital Tallinn – which will be the host city for Ireland’sopening tie on November 11^th.

So it’s the draw we all wanted and most travelling Irish fans will notbe disappointed as the Estonian capital Tallinn, has garnered a reputation inrecent years as the party city of the Baltics. Hopefully on the night ofNovember 11^th locals will be awoken to the drunken holleringsof 'ole ole ole'.

Tallinn is spilt between the rather grey technologically advanced partof the city and the Medieval Old Town which is lined with bars and, ahem,Gentlemen’s Clubs. Consequently - to the annoyance of locals – the city hasbecome a mecca for stag parties, mostly thanks to cheap Ryanair and Easyjetflights.

Alas, this won’t be the case for Irish fans who wish to fly from Dublinas flights are already sold out on the day of the opening clash, andopportunistic Ryanair have hiked the price of a fare to €200 plus for theThursday prior to the match. Normally the cost is a relatively paltry €60 for a flight from Dublin to Tallinn.

There is hope for your bank balance,however, as the Latvian capital Riga – which Ryanair fly to from Dublin - isjust a four hour bus journey to Tallinn and there’s also the option of taking atwo hour ferry trip from Helsinki. Both routes are also very reasonablypriced.

Those who do arrive in the Estonian capitalwill not be disappointed as in my view the city is an underrated gem with thepicturesque Old Town - full of medieval buildings and sceniccobblestoned lanes.

Though the Old Town Square is the most beautiful part of Tallinn, Iwould recommend venturing through the various side-streets which are full ofkooky and alternative cafes with no shortage of friendly locals.

Moving round the city iseffortless, as most of Tallinn is easily accessible by foot. A site not tobe missed is the Alexander NevskyCathedral, opposite the Estonian parliament, which makes you aware that Russiais not so far away.

As Irish fans – and players - are not shy when it comes to belting out atune they will no doubt enjoy the many karaoke bars in the Old Town (Yes Robbie, they do have Garth Brooks). And of course, there’s the obligatory Irishbar with Molly Malone’s - being a popular haunt among locals for watching PremierLeague matches. Oh, and more importantly, a pint won’t break the bank: I paidno more than €3.

One of the first things you’re likely to notice in Estonia is howbeautiful the natives are, probably thanks to the state lying between Russiaand Scandinavia. Pristine skin, stunning eyes, stylishly dressed – don’tbe surprised if one of your cohort falls for a gorgeous Baltic local.

And if you approach a young lady in a local bar you probably won’t berebuffed as polite Estonians are keen to improve their English by speaking to nativespeakers.

Until 1991 Estonia was ruled by The Soviet Union and while saying you’renot fond of their neighbours may ingratiate yourself with most of thelocals, be careful, as 25% of the population are Russian.

Estonia from my experience is a fairlysafe country thanks partly to their police force, though they’d have noproblem throwing Irish fans into the back of a Paddy wagon, should theymisbehave. During my trip I saw an English stag party get, let say, somerather overzealous treatment.

So keep the conduct jovial and you’ll have a great time.

Do say: Those Russians weren’t very kind to ye.

Don’t say: The Russians are coming again.

Going out: Irish fans will enjoy mingling with the locals in ShootersBar and the huge Hollywood nightclub which has five floors! Besidesthose, they’ll be no problem finding a bar - just follow the noise (there’splenty.)

Eating: The Old Town offers a host of local cuisine but I wouldrecommend walking through the side streets as better deals are often availablein the less ‘touristy’ locations. In my view the best restaurant in Estonia,believe it or not, is the African Kitchen - great value in a funky settingwhich makes you think you’re in downtown Lagos rather than a Baltic state. If you’re on a budget TacoExpress - opposite the Hollywood nightclub - is also a good option.

Stay: Seeing as most Irish supporters are not visiting for a quiet break‘The Tallinn Backpackers Hostel’ is a lively place with friendly staff who knowthe area well. A six bed dorm is €12. Though when I stayed there I hadnightmares as I met a creepy looking – though harmless - man who was SteveStaunton’s doppelganger. *Shudder*

The Wanderer

Recently I returned to Ireland after a month I’m unlikely to forget. Last September I travelled across Europe visiting many beautiful countries and meeting some interesting and intriguing people along the way. For the next few weeks this blog will share my adventures.

You may ask why did I not write this blog while travelling, like most normal folk? Good question. Well, my dear Mother is an irrational worrier – when I told her I was venturing to these ‘strange countries’ (her words) she could imagine every tragic story she’s viewed on Sky News involving her sweet innocent boy: being kidnapped, murdered or forced to work in slave labour, you name it, Mammy Culkin pictured it. For example one day on my travels I fired guns in Latvia and a blog entry entitled ‘Shooting AK47s tomorrow – really excited’ would have, perhaps, sent my mum to an early grave.

So now I’m back. Safe and sound. Free to write anything - rest assured that my Mother won’t be shaking in the corner of a bedroom praying with rosary beads for my safety.

Reason two for writing this blog post-trip is I wanted to have some time to reflect on my travels and see what incidents and stories stood out, making the posts – I hope - more readable. Also, despite travelling solo I, ironically, rarely spent time alone. So, it would have been difficult and unsociable to say to a group of new holiday friends, “I’d love to juggle monkeys (didn’t happen, though it would be amazing) but I have to write a blog entry that only my Mum will read."

Unfortunately, on my way to Auschwitz I dropped and broke my camera phone which had all my incredible snaps of buildings and hundreds and hundreds of similar looking churches. So you’ll have to rely on my words and some pretty pictures courtesy of google images (which are probably better quality anyway).

During my adventures I tried to emulate, two of the finest travel documentary makers: Michael Palin and Karl Pilkinton. And at times I was those two intrepid explorers: mixing with affable locals like Palin and thinking ‘this is rubbish, I miss beans on toast” like the round headed genius.

Hopefully, you’ll read and enjoy these entries as I talk about, among other things, searching for a pub in Paris’s Red Light District that would televise Transfer Deadline Day and meeting a Brazilian who said the most famous Irish man in Brazil is Tony Cascarino. Don’t worry, not all my anecdotes are football related.

So read and comment if you like. Oh, and I love you Mum. I survived. Just…

It’s been a long 15 years

March 16^th 1996 and my beloved QPR are beating the eventual Premiership champions 1-0, with a fortuitous Dennis Irwin own- goal. The team - managed by the Mr Nice Guy and Tango voice-over artist Ray Wilkins - have been struggling all season since our star striker Les Ferdinand was sold to Newcastle United the previous summer.

But today, QPR look the polar opposite of a timid side that has been languishing in bottom three throughout the season - we were beating Alex Ferguson’s first great Manchester United team.

With just a handful of games left, a win of this magnitude would have, perhaps, inspired us to stay above the relegation trap door. Unfortunately, every QPR fan feared the inevitable as we nervously struggled to defend our lead with the game moving into ‘Fergie Time’. Even in the mid-nineties United had a penchant for salvaging a result in the dying minutes and low and behold, with the clock at 95 minutes, Eric Cantona rescued a point for his team. A hammer blow for QPR’s belief and morale. Relegation almost certain.

I was only ten years old at the time and my father – a Manchester United Fan – seemed to be more preoccupied in an Ireland versus England Five Nations clash as he held a portable radio in one hand and a Racing Post in the other. As the final whistle sounded that day I knew the club was doomed. I realised we would not enjoy lofty fixtures like this one, for a long time.

Suddenly, to my bewilderment, I began to blubber uncontrollably as if I suffered a family bereavement. I remember waiting to leave the stadium and was consoled by at least 20 – mostly overweight - tattooed diehard fans (who had also been in tears). “Don’t worry mate we’ll be back”, one said. As my Father walked down the stadium steps his face turned to shock as he couldn’t believe how devastated I was.

That was my last memory of QPR playing in the Premier League, and at times since, the prospect of us returning seemed highly unlikely.

I know every supporter claims it’s not easy to support their team, but the preceding years to the R’s Premier League return have been as tumultuous as a serious of The Sopranos.

We’ve had guns in the boardroom, a youth player murdered, a promising young striker killed in a car crash, been beaten in the FA Cup by a team of mechanics and an endless list of inept managers.

Our darkest days, however, was when the future of the club hung in the balance after the collapse of ITV digital and misguided decisions at boardroom level (like buying Mike Sheron and John Spencer for millions of pounds, for example).

To make matters worse we were in England’s third tier playing the likes Chesterfield and Wycombe Wanders and forced to sell our key players as well as being imposed with a transfer embargo.

It’s a shame that Ian Holloway left in inauspicious circumstances in 2006 as his crucial role of stabilising the club during those dark days should not be understated or forgotten.

In many ways our promotion to the Championship in 2004 was more of miracle when considering the paltry financial resources Holloway had at his disposal.

Seven years and numerous managers later QPR achieved something the fans had been waiting for since the glory days of Ferdinand and Sinclair et al: Premier League football.

Though our narcissistic owners would like to take credit for the club's top flight return, it’s evident that by the laws of probability they would eventually find the right manager. Even with Briatore and Ecclestone’s limited knowledge of the game it was impossible to make the wrong choice that often. Although in their defence, they did stabilise QPR financially, after club was saddled with debt for many years.

The turning point for us last season was when the perma-tan ego maniac (that's Briatore) stepped into the background and handed the reigns of power to the more pragmatic Amit Bhatia. Alas, last May just weeks after QPR secured promotion to the Premier League, he resigned as vice-chairman of the club after a disagreement with the board on a number of issues, including over the rise in ticket prices.

So unfortunately for Rangers and Neil Warnock the world’s tightest billionaires are back in control, though there may be further boardroom change if Tony Fernandes, founder of Air Asia airline, becomes the new majority owner.

It’s easy to be irked with the last few months – where season ticket prices were hiked to between £549 and £999 and only £1.25 million in transfers have been spent - but most importantly we’re back in the big league. And whether it’s only for one season, each Ranger’s supporter will, hopefully, enjoy every minute of their team competing in the world's most lucrative league.

Though let’s hope our lucratively rich owners don’t provide an embarrassing sideshow which could render this season a laughing stock and one to forget.This would certainly make this long suffering QPR fan blubber again.

Irish broadband in the dark ages

For many internet users in Cork logging on is a constant source of frustration - whether it’s the painfully slow process of downloading a music track or waiting an eternity for your favourite site to load, we’ve all experienced computer rage at some point.

The frequent cause of our ire is slow broadband. Ireland’s world ranking for broadband speed makes for grim reading; a recent survey from speedtest.net places us 50th out of 162 countries, behind developing nations such as Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova.

Our average internet speed of 5.65 megabytes per second falls well short of the World average at 7.61 Mbps and even further behind the typical European standard of 10 Mbps. According to the survey South Korea has the fastest broadband speeds of 31.73 Mbps, while our UK neighbours also don't feature too highly on the list - ranked 34th - with 7.7 Mbps being their average speed.

So why are we so far behind? While most Irish cities experience a decent broadband connection, the national average speed is significantly lowered due to county and rural areas having a substandard service and often no internet access whatsoever. It may only be a nuisance for households, but it’s a problem that seriously affects businesses across the country.

“It so frustrating” says Conor O’Neil, CEO of Louder Voice, an internet company based in Bandon.

He adds: “As we’re an online business we rely so much on our broadband connection, which is far too slow for our liking. As we’re a 24 hour company we need constant internet access around the clock, and unfortunately when 7pm comes our broadband is extremely slow as this is the peak time for internet usage. We’re currently paying for a 7 Mbps when in reality we’re only getting a 6 Mbps speed, which isn't good enough for an internet business.”

Many other businesses in the county also face the same predicament and its led to O’Neil being extra careful.

“We have to back up all our information up as we really don't trust our broadband service. The biggest pain for us is our upload speed, which really affects us . Our connection is even affected by the weather, we were down for 48 hours after the recent floods”

O’Neil believes a serious commitment to higher quality broadband needs to be made from the government.

“There needs to be an effort like there was with electricity in the 1920s with the Ardnacrusha power station. That’s how important broadband is these days. I’m not sure if the government realises how important this is, they seem to be more focused on Toyota Prius electrical cars.”

The Department of Communications, Energy and Natural resources claim they are fully committed to providing a much improved internet service, having already started the National Broadband scheme in December 2008 which aims to provide online access for every part of the country.

A spokesperson for the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources stated: “Under the terms of the National Broadband Scheme (NBS) contract, 3 is required to have provided coverage in all 1,028 Electoral Divisions (EDs) by end of October 2010.

“The original date for this was September 2010, but following a request by 3, under the Force Majeure provisions of the NBS contract, the Minister granted a 4 week extension to the September 2010 date due to the time lost in the network roll-out during the severe winter weather experienced in December 2009 and January 2010.”

However the ambitious scheme has been met with some scepticism, particularly from Irish Rural Link (an organisation representing rural communities) who have long campaigned for greater broadband services for less central parts of the country.

According to Irish Rural Link Policy and Communications Officer Seán O’Leary “the NBS promised 100% rural broadband yet at least 25,000 homes and businesses in rural areas will not be able to access broadband despite the scheme. The capabilities of mobile broadband are being oversold, users are not getting the speeds promised and rural areas need quality, wired broadband to be connected and competitive.”

Eircom - Ireland’s largest broadband supplier - has revealed the next twelve months will see a significant progression for broadband In Ireland, including towns in Cork.

“Eircom are moving towards a faster speed of broadband, with our next generation broadband being phased out at the moment", says Paul Bradley from Eircom. "By the end of the year many parts of the country will assess to 8 Mb speed broadband and you wont experience congestion at peak times. In Cork this service will be accessible in the city and also in Dennehy’s Cross Mallow, Youghal, Ballincollig and Middleton."

An 8 Mbps service nationwide would take Ireland above the global average speed and Eircom plan to roll out a new 24 Mbps service by next March. They are even aims to launch a new age mega speed form of Broadband, which could make computer rage a distant memory.

Bradley adds:“We’ll be trialing a fibre to home broadband in Wexford next spring. This will see speed of 100 Mbps, so I would have optimism for the future of broadband in Ireland."

Tough times for the arts in Cork

The temporary closure of Cork Opera House has highlighted the uncertain times for the arts in the city. The sector is being hit particularly hard during these recessionary times with funding significantly reduced from the National Arts Council and at local government level.

The severe winter weather conditions have also affected the local arts scene: Cork Opera House experienced a slow trade during this time - which ultimately lead its summer closure - and UCC’s Lewis Glucksman Gallery was left desolate after the November floods. November also saw the closure of The Kino, Cork’s only art house cinema, due to financial difficulties.

Several arts centres in the city are now surviving on a month by month basis, desperately seeking funding from any avenue.

“Everyone in the arts across the country is feeling the pinch, not just in Cork”, says Johnny Hanrahan, Artistic Director of Meridian, a Cork based theatre company.

“As the funding has been reduced in recent years, we have made cuts so unfortunately there have been job losses. Many people are now pro-am, so they have an extra daytime or evening job, which is not ideal. Thankfully people in the arts work financial miracles - we have a great management of money. You have to remember that many people involved in the arts - including myself - have experienced recessions before, so despite the current gloom, I’d still be optimistic.”

Hanrahan was on the board that decided to close the Opera House which caused much disquiet amongst many Corkonians.

“I believe it was the right choice. It was a prudent decision which had to be taken when considering the poor winter the venue had. The Opera House will be back this autumn and hopefully they’ll be a decent trade.”

Hanrahan like all his colleagues in the sector are passionate regarding the importance of the arts to Cork.

“They have an intrinsic value for the people of Cork. Without the arts what pastimes would people have? They’d be no TV, no film, people need to remember the arts is everywhere. If there’s no arts we’re just inarticulate robots!”

Triskel Arts Centre is another cultural venue which is struggling to cope. The centre has been at the forefront of arts in Cork since its beginning in 1978 and heavily relies on funding from the Arts Council.

“In the last two years our funding has been cut by 30%”, says Tony Sheehan, Director of the Triskel Arts Centre.

“With our funding situation and the closure of the Opera House I would be very worried about our future - these are very hard times. For some reason Cork seems to be hit particularly hard. The last funding we received from the Arts Council was €250,000, we do our very best with the money we’re provided. However there is room for optimism, as the centre is moving to Christchurch on South Main street, so this will be beneficial for the future of the centre.”

Sheehan believes the arts in Cork has been a victim of inverted snobbery.

“I think some people in Cork feel the arts is elitist and that’s really not the case, we like to think the shows and performances we provide are for everyone, he says.“I believe the arts are so important as it completes Cork City - they create jobs, provide entertainment and give access to creativity”.

The Lewis Glucksman gallery has endured harsher times than any other arts venue in the city. Not only has it had to contend with a funding cut, but much of the gallery has also been severely affected by November’s floods. Development officer, Ciaran Meade is thankful the gallery has been able to survive amid turbulent times.

“Our location is a double edged sword, it’s a beautiful setting by the river, but it does leave us susceptible to flooding, he says. “Thankfully most of the damage during the floods was covered by insurance, so we were able to get back on our feet. We’re funded from the Arts Council and UCC, there have been significant cuts in recent times. Financially our heads are just above water at the moment. It’s unfortunate that in a recession the arts are hit particularly hard.”

The Cork Arts Theatre is one of the few venues that doesn't receive any funding from the National Arts Council. Artistic Director, Dolores Mannion believes the Irish arts scene has not been pragmatic enough with their finances.

“It’s a disgrace how much money is wasted, says Mannion. “We’re probably one of the few theatres in Cork that made a profit last year, and that was only €150! Everything we do we think about cost and try to run the centre for as little as possible. I doubt any other centre save like we do. The little funding we do get is from the City Council and that’s a struggle. Recently we received a grant of €2,700 for the year and we had to give 700 in rates back to the Council.”

Fine Gael City Councillor Jim Corr, who sits on the Cork Opera House board, believes the City Council are doing all they can to support the arts and feels Cork is not receiving enough financial support from the National Arts Council.

“I was pleased that there were no cuts in the arts this year by the council, now whether there are cuts next year is a different story”, he says. These are very difficult times for the arts. In my view Dublin gets too much funding in relation to the rest of the country. I’m not happy with where the money goes and Cork should receive more financial aid.”

The Arts Council - which is the government agency for funding the sector- is certain that no part of the country receives preferential treatment and insist they have made a financial effort in Cork, particularly with the Opera house.

A spokesperson for the Arts Council stated:“Funding from the Arts Council to the arts programme of Cork Opera House from 2005 to 2010 has totalled €1,124,000. This is an amount made available to the Opera House to assist with work which requires subvention, including performances in various art forms. The Opera House also promotes work which does not require subvention and which forms part of the essential commercial operations of the venue.”

Cllr. Corr is encouraging locals to support the troubled sector.

“I recently sat on the board for the mid-summer festival and it was very successful but the arts in Cork rely on public patronage. We need the people of Cork to attend events to give the arts scene in Cork a much needed boost.”

Last November the Cork tourism sector was buoyed as the city was named as one of ‘Lonely Planet’s top ten cities to visit for 2010.’

It was quite a turnaround for a city that received strong criticism from the same publication in 1999, describing Cork “as a drab, dreary, dull and dismal place”.

Ten years later, Tony Wheeler, co-founder of the travel guide said: “Cork has been in Dublin's shadows for far too long, it has emerged as a fantastic destination in its own right with great restaurants, galleries, bars and shops as well as stunning scenery on its doorstep.”

For many struggling hotels, guest houses and restaurants, this was a timely piece of publicity as the sector has been particularly affected by the tough economic times.

So with this ringing endorsement from the world’s most reputable travel bible, Cork businesses would be forgiven for thinking that the city would be throbbing with tourists during the new year. Although many have been left scratching their heads wondering if the accolade was just a pleasant dream, as the tourists have arrived, but not in the numbers anticipated.

“It’s been a disappointment, I don't think there was enough advertisement for it”, says Eoin McCarthy, manager of Cafe Bar Deli, one of the largest restaurants on Cork’s French Church street.

During the boom years the street’s eateries would be brim full of customers, many of whom were tourists, nowadays it’s an all too familiar sign of the times in Cork, with several closed businesses.

McCarthy adds: “we’re one of the few places on the street that’s still going. In the last couple of years 90 percent of the businesses on this street have either closed down or moved. The summer closure of the Opera house won’t help us either, although we’ve had some new trade from the new Opera Lane street. We seem to be getting more European tourists, whereas in the past we had allot of American trade. Although I don't think they’ve arrived because of the Lonely Planet list.”

Of all the businesses in the tourism sector, hotels have been hit particularly hard, some being taken over by NAMA, others being forced to slash their prices. The plight of hotels was outlined recently when the collapse of 1800 hotels left hundreds without accommodation. Hoteliers are also despondent with the lack of marketing to publicise the city as one of Lonely Planet’s finest.

“It’s frustrating there wasn't more of a push to adversities the list, it was the same with Capital of Culture in 2005”, says Anne Gough sales executive of the Metropole hotel, one of the largest in Cork. “We and many other hotels have been given a lack of support when it comes to marketing it’s so frustrating. Every year we sit down with Failte Ireland who ask us what we’re going to do, when it should be the other way round, she says.”

The Metropole hotel has been synonymous with the annual Cork Jazz festival, one of the busiest times of the year for Cork hotels, but Gough believes more should be done to promote the smaller events.

“There’s so much happening in the city and people don't know because it’s not advertised. Recently we’ve had a steady trade due to the Marquee concerts and the Mid-summer festival, but at the moment its quiet and this is the time Cork needs more publicity for the more lower-profile events”, she says.

Gough can only dream of Cork receiving the same publicity Galway has experienced, with Discover Ireland’s television advertising campaign.

“There’s so many ads for Galway, if only Cork can get some of that attention. It’s always the case that Failte Ireland are pushing Kerry, Galway and Dublin, when tourists already know those destinations. They need to market other less known places such as Cork. We’re not just looking for tourists outside of the country, there’s a big market with all of the surrounding towns”

A double room in the Metropole is now 20 euro cheaper than a year ago. The cut-price rates are also affecting the trade of guest houses around Cork City.

Angela Hartett is proprietress of the Blarney Stone guest house on the Western road, who like all her competitors, has had the vacancy sign up a bit too much for her liking.

“Cork has always been bad when it comes to marketing itself”, says Hartnett. “Maybe the council should do more but obviously budgets are tight. It’s the same old story I’m afraid. Everyone who comes to stay with us knows about the Lonely Planet so it’s a shame there wasn't more of an effort to market the list.”

On any Saturday afternoon there are tourists scattered around Cork City. But why have they come to Cork? The Lonely Planet list perhaps? A group of German students are enjoying some street entertainment on the recently refurbished Patrick’s Street.

“We came to Cork because my friends says it is cheaper than Dublin and it has some nice bars and restaurants, says German student Phillip Wolze. “I didn't know about Cork being in the Lonely Planet list, that’s quite impressive. I’m surprised I haven't noticed it walking around the streets of Cork.”

So has Cork been sufficiently marketed abroad? Fiona Buckley is head of operations at Faillte Ireland and believes a genuine effort has been made.

“It's important to remember that’s it’s too early to judge whether the list has made a difference. Outside of Ireland it’s our job to market the whole of the country not just Cork. Even though the Lonely Planet is an extremely popular travel guide, there are many who are not aware of it as there are other guides on the market. We’ve oversaw a number of advertising campaigns outside of Cork to try and appeal to the domestic market. They’ve included a Lonely Planet sign campaign on Dublin bus stops and commercials on national radio. There was also an effort made by the Cork City Council with the sign and billboard campaign.”

It was Cork City Council's hope that the billboards - which can be seen on the outskirts of the city - would attract visitors from the surrounding county and beyond. The initiative was spearheaded by Cork City Manager,Joe Gavin and former Mayor, Cllr. Dara Muphy. The signs and billboards were erected on the May bank holiday weekend, six months after Cork was named on the list. So why the delay?

“This was a massive boost for the City and was a bonus as nobody knew it was coming”, says Cllr. Dara Murphy.”Therefore we were unable to put up the billboards and signs as quickly as we would of liked, as the billboard project required the necessary planning. When we were awarded the Capital of Culture in 2005, we knew well in advance, so we were able to market the event straight away. You have to also remember that November was a very eventful month for Cork and the City Council. The handling of the floods was a preoccupation and it was certainly a factor into why we weren't able to market the Lonely Planet list sooner”.

Despite criticism, the potential of the Lonely Planet distinction is certainly not lost - August has always been a traditionally strong month for the tourism sector in Cork due to the high number of British visitors and the October bank holiday Jazz weekend always guarantees high occupancy in hotels and guest houses.

“It’s unfortunate that Cork seems to be Ireland’s best kept secret, it shouldn't be”, says Angela Hartnett, who’s hoping the vacancy sign will be kept in the drawer for the rest of the year.

Will 3D change how we watch television?

The last four weeks has showcased the grandest television event on the planet with over 800 million viewers in 214 countries tuning in for the World Cup.

It's also big business: RTE have confirmed television advertising revenue increased by over 20% during the tournament. The public service broadcaster's advertising packages during the World Cup are as much as €170,000 for over fifty 30-second spots.

The marriage between television and sport has for many years been an extremely prosperous one for both parties. Thanks to Sky, the Premier League is now worth over 2 billion euros. In Spain - which has an unemployment rate higher than Ireland (14%) - Real Madrid bought Cristiano Ronaldo for a world record fee of £80 million, a deal which would never of occurred if it wasn't for Spain's lucrative television market.

It's clear that television needs sport as much as sport needs television.

Just ask the many electrical suppliers in Cork, who's flat screens have been flying out the door before and during the World Cup.

"This is one of our busiest times of the year", says Michel Hodnett, manager of O'Callaghan's electricals.

"People will come into our store specifically looking to buy a TV for the World Cup. The flat screens are certainly the best sellers.The future of the television industry is extremely reliant on sport and we benefit hugely from it. It's ashame Ireland didn't qualify as business would of been even greater, but we'll still have steady sales."

While many television programmes are now watched online, sport is almost exclusively watched live on television as viewers wish to experience and share the moment as it happens (over half a million people watched Ireland's World Cup qualifier against France).

Sports fans, particularly young men, are the biggest telly addicts . A 2008 ESPN study found that the average young sports follower will consume ten hours of media a day, compared to five hours for other young men. They will spend more time feeding their obsession- by listening to the radio, surfing the web, reading newspapers and most of all, watching television.

"Why do you think people take up Chorus or Sky subscriptions: 80 % of the time it's because of sport", adds Hodnett.

Last week O'Callaghan's were one of the first electrical suppliers in Cork to stock 3D television sets. Hodnett's believes 3D TVs could change the context of the industry.

"I think we'll see an impact with viewing movies, sport, but particularly video games. I think there could be a revolution in this field. Like any other progressions in television it will take a while before 3D becomes a big seller. When HD TVs arrived a few years back, sales were slow, now they're our biggest sellers as Sky are now increasing their HD channels . The technology comes first, then satellite and cable operators will wait and see if it's profitable before committing. Sky for example aren't launching their 3D channel until this September."

Electrical suppliers and media companies alike hope that 3-D television will follow the path set by high-definition TV. The success of Oscar winning film, Avatar suggests there is a demand for 3D, but will this translate into peoples living rooms. Again, sport is a massive area for growth as the 3D viewing experience is akin to actually being involved in the match. Viewers are able to see where the ball will drop and which player is in the best position. Although there is an obvious drawback...the glasses.

It may seem exciting for kids, but will all the family (including Grandad) actually sit and watch a 3D broadcast? Then there's the cost, 3D television's cost up to 3,000 euro and you don't get a pair of shades for the whole family.

Hodnett adds: "You only get two pairs of glasses per 3D set. To buy an extra pair costs 150 euro, this is going to be a real problem. I think many customers will be put off by this".

Despite the challenge in selling 3D sets, business is actually healthy amongst electrical suppliers.

"During recessions the sales of TVs actually increase", says Hodnett. In these times people place greater importance in what television set they have. Many people will often think I have my have my house, I have my car, now I need a good television."

The internet provides a significant challenge to television with many viewers now exclusively watching their favourite shows online. Each month Britain views more than 120 million television and radio programmes from the BBC iPlayer, an online catch-up service. The RTE player has also proved successful when it was launched over a year ago, and since last January is now available worldwide. Due to online demand, most new television sets have access to the internet which include inbuilt stations such as Twitter and YouTube.

Former Prime Time presenter and social media expert Mark Little, believes the internet is not a threat to television.

"Television and the internet are not mutually exclusive. A website such as twitter actually compliments television as many viewers can express their views on the site while watching television. We will see a website like twitter being used to its full capacity during the world cup. I think although we're seeing a greater convergence between the different types of technology, they'll all be able to survive side by side as people will use their iPhone or iPad for each of their own benefits."

The iPad -which is to be launched in Ireland this month - will combine many forms of technology onto a 9.7 inch screen. But does it pose a threat to television?

Little adds: "I don't think the iPad is a threat. The iPad will be used to consume news, such as reading newspaper and magazine articles. The product is very user friendly and will be a huge impact in this area of media."

In a world of varied audiences and increased competition television is still, the only real global mass medium. If it can adapt and diversify to its audience television will almost certainly continue to grow.

Hodnett adds: "there was a stage when we thought we couldn't go any further ,now we can't predict the future. It's a very exciting time to be involved in television."

The YouTube phenomenon

In just five years YouTube has changed our Internet behaviour forever - its brought us break dancing babies, a cat who can play the keyboard, Susan Boyle and who could forget our very own Crystal Swing. For many of us not a day goes by without checking the latest YouTube sensation, and even though the site was only launched in 2005, it’s difficult to remember how we viewed video content online prior to its beginning.

Whether it’s watching an old TV advert or revelling in a piece of sporting nostalgia, we usually rely on YouTube which has over two billion daily users making it the third most popular website (behind Yahoo and Google).

So what’s the secret to their success? “YouTube revolutionised media distribution, it did things better and simpler ” says Chris Brauer Director of Media and Innovation in Computing at Goldsmiths, University of London. He adds: “Prior to YouTube videos sharing online was a problem as it was difficult to view the content as there were so many different competing platforms, such as Windows Media Player and Real player. YouTube is far simpler and there are no barriers to entry”

Brauer also attributes YouTube’s growth to the lines of distinction between television and Internet becoming evermore smaller.

“Television is now more interactive, we’re currently witnessing the convergence between television and the internet. More and more people now watch their favourite television programmes online, we recently saw a partnership with YouTube and Hulu (American Video on demand website). With YouTube we’re seeing two camps - the new media versus the old, and their both fighting the battle”.

In the ever changing world of new media Brauer believes YouTube will continue to prosper if the demand is there.

“The audience will ultimately decide and YouTube will follow them. The makers of the site could never of foreseen how popular the site would be as it wasn't created for anything in particular.”

YouTube’s dominance significantly increased when the site was bought by Google for $1.5 billion in November 2006. Despite its huge popularity the site is not a profitable one - with annual losses of over $175 million. The site’s business model is an unconventional one as it doesn't appear to be making any money. So how is it sustainable?

Brauer adds:“Their not the only social media site that are making a loss, Twitter are the same. Facebook are one of the few that are actually making a profit. The reason why YouTube can still operate even though their making such a loss is because of Google’s backing. For Google YouTube is a loss leader. The money that YouTube does make is in targeted advertising. You have to remember that only one in seven videos on YouTube are monetizable. As two billion people each day log on to YouTube, google are able to monitor and follow peoples trends and behaviour, that’s allot of information .”

The site has angered many TV stations, music companies and other providers as users frequently upload content that they regard as a violation of copyright , rather than exposure or publicity. However, an unexpected off-shoot of the YouTube - which nobody could of foresaw - was the overnight celebrities the site has created.

“YouTube is very much a site to see what’s the thing of the moment, what’s popular now, which is why the top two videos of all time are Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber music videos”, says Brauer.”It’s only a matter of time before the latest pop video is the most viewed of all time, knocking Beiber off the top spot. With most videos their longevity is going to be limited until the next big video comes along.”

So what does the future hold for YouTube?

“I think we’re going to see three or four areas where YouTube is going to progress”, says Brauer.

“The first is mobility based content,which will be localised material. Google are also ready to launch a new social networking, where YouTube will obviously be a major feature. In the next few years we’ll also begin to see more web based TV programmes, ones of which will be very well made. And 3D will be an area of viewing YouTube will hope to capitalise on just like they did with HD viewing”.

But nobody could of predicted how a YouTube video would make her an International star and raise issues of social analysis.

The 22 year-old American is one of the few YouTube sensations that has actually carved out a career based on his 2007 video, where he tearfully defends his hero, Britney spears. The video has presented a platform for Crocker to talk about his homosexuality and the tough childhood he experienced living in a conservative part of America. Crocker has been invited on chat shows and has also performed as a dancer and a comedian.

Unfortunately not all YouTube videos change peoples lives for the better. The video of a secondary school student from,Quebec, Canada, wielding a golf ball retriever like a Star Wars lightsaber, resulted in chronic bullying of the teenager. He and his family subsequently sued the makers of the video - his schoolmates - for $250,000.

Long awaited flood report set to be published

An Oireachtas report will be released next Tuesday to outline recommendations into the handling of future flooding in Cork.

Deputy Ciaran Lynch, Labour TD for Cork South Central and Spokesperson on Housing and Local government, spoke to me about the report.

She began by expressing her dissatisfaction with the government's policy of direct provision.

Bill's journey to the top (Part two)

For nearly half a century Bill O'Herlihy has been one of the most recognisable and respected faces on Irish television. Ever since he was a child O'Herlihy wanted to follow his grandfather's (William O'Herlihy) footsteps and pursue a career in the media.William O'Herlihy was the former editor of the Cork Examiner whose brothers also worked as journalists in Ireland and Britain.

When Bill finished secondary school he made it clear to his father that he didn't want to go to University - he wanted to be a journalist. Soon after O'Herlihy met George Crosby - the chairman of the Cork Examiner - who told Bill that when when a vacancy arised he would be hired due to his family pedigree in journalism. Six months later O'Herlihy started working in the reading room of the Examiner and then became sub-editor of the Evening Echo at the age of 17. The Corkman then established himself as one of the most respected writers for The Examiner.

" I absolutely loved working with the Examiner, there was a great atmosphere there"says O'Herlihy.

"I was extremely happy with the paper and felt privileged that I was doing something I enjoyed. I also loved living and working in Cork and I never had any aspirations to move away."

O'Herlihy had also worked with local radio and in 1965 he was asked by well respected broadcaster Frank Hall, If he would consider television reporting for Newsbeat, a regional news programme.

" I initially refused as I had absolutely no interest in working in television.At the time I didn't reckon I was cut out for TV, I felt you needed to have allot of confidence. Newsbeat asked me again to report and I said I'd only do it on the condition that if it was bad, it would not be broadcasted. My first television appearance was an interview to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the sinking of The Lusitania. I felt it was a torturous piece of television and I reckoned that was the end of my television career. To my amazement they liked my report and wanted me to work as a reporter for the programme on a freelance basis."

During this time he continued to work as journalist for the Cork Examiner but the lure of television during the 'swinging sixties' was to hard to resist .

"I had a fantastic time working with Newsbeat. Myself and Roy Hammond (Cameraman) travelled the country and you have to remember that in those days being on television was a big deal. When we'd film in towns across the country we would literally stop the traffic as a crowd of people would be watching us film. At this stage television excited me and I was getting far more confident. So I asked George Crosby ( then Chairman of The Examiner) if I could take a year's leave of absence from the paper, and he refused. Shortly after that I cut my ties with the paper to focus on television"

O'Herlihy was one of the first reporters based outside of Dublin and gained a reputation for being one of RTE's top journalists . In 1968 he was offered a position on RTE's flagship currents affairs programme, Seven Days - the Prime Time of its day.

"When I was offered the job, I made it perfectly clear to RTE that I wanted to be based in Cork. The editor of Seven Days Muiris MacConghail told me to pack my bags and head to Dublin. At the time my mother was not happy that I'd left a great job at the Examiner. So I went to work with Seven days, which was a huge show at the time, and I worked as one of their field reporters."

During the late sixties Sevens Days had a reputation for being a hard-hitting investigative programme that wasn't afraid of challenging the government. But the programme came into controversy when O'Herlihy reported a story on illegal money lending. The report was unconventional as it was one of the first television pieces to use hidden cameras, it claimed the government were not responding to illegal moneylending. A tribunal would follow and O'Herlihy was forced to move away from current affairs.

"Seven Days was a ground breaking programme and we weren't liked by the government as we would push them on certain important issues. The government saw that RTE was part of the government service and unfortunately they took grave exception to our report on moneylending."

"Senior management in RTE were not happy with me and I had to leave RTE Current Affairs. I may well of been sacked at the time, but fortunately I still had 15 months left on my contract -so they had to do something with me. I was asked by RTE Director General, Oliver Malloney, what I wanted to do and I said I wanted to go into sport."

O'Herlihy began his association with RTE Sport in 1972 but he wasn't welcomed with open arms.

"When I first met Michael O'Heir, who was the head of RTE sport at the time, he told me:'I don't like your style and I don't think you're suited for sport, but you're welcome here. He also told me that I would not broadcast for 6 months and I'd mostly work in production, the following day Mick told me that I was to do a report. I said to him: 'but you told me yesterday I would have to wait six months', he replied, 'that was yesterday and this is today'."

From here O'Herlihy became RTE's chief sports anchor and has since become synonymous with Messrs Dunphy and Giles. But what were his first impressions of the well known pundits?

" I first became aware of Eamonn as a player and even in those days he was very outspoken. I remember interviewing him in the mid-seventies when Ireland played Chile in Santiago. He was dissatisfied with the regime and I gave him quite a hostile interview asking him if he thought it was hypocritical to play in Chile when he felt so strongly about the political system . After that interview I felt there was a mutual respect between the two of us, and we've got on very well since.

"With Johnny Giles I remember being very intimated by him , this man is a legend of Irish Sport and he has a vast knowledge of the game . But he was so friendly and unpatronizing."

O'Herlihy became a household name during Ireland's World Cup feats in Italia 90, when most of the country were glued to their television sets.

"That World Cup was watershed moment, not just for Irish sport, but for Irish television. We had a massive viewership-92% of the country were watching, this was a figure not even the BBC could come close to. It was very special to be part of a significant part of Irish history."

Even today, RTE's soccer coverage gains a substantial audience, particularly when 'the three wise men' are broadcasting. O'Herlihy believes they offer an alternative to other forms of sports broadcasting.

"What separates our coverage from other stations is our honesty. We're not there to market the game, if a game is rubbish, we'll say it is. I think on many of the English channels the pundits are too conscious of upsetting their former teammates, where as we take a more honest approach."

The 71 year-old is eagerly looking forward to presenting his sixth World Cup, but does he plan to retire any time soon? "Well so long as my health is good and if RTE still want me... I'll continue."
